It’s a common dilemma we face at the grocery store: how do we choose between organic, natural, non-gmo or conventionally grown or made food? There are many studies that show the benefits of choosing organic food over the alternative and how that choice can make us healthier. We often think hard about choosing things that we put in our body, and even what we put on our body (organic clothing, makeup, etc.) but what about what we put our body on?

To live our fullest lives, we take care of our bodies. We’re hopefully already exercising, eating healthy and getting the right amount of sleep each day. We spend roughly one third of our lives in bed. That’s likely more than any other activity over the span of our lives. Because of this, what we choose to sleep on should be not only the most comfortable, but also the least toxic for our bodies.

So, what makes a mattress organic? We’ve made a list of items you should check before buying an “organic mattress” to make sure you’re getting the healthier and happier sleep you deserve.

Organic Cotton Fabric & Filling

Check where the cotton is coming from and how it is grown. Organic cotton is grown without harmful pesticides and has no Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). After it has been farmed, it must be processed according to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), which prohibits many commonly used harmful chemicals and requires that the method used to process the cotton is sustainable.

Organic Wool

To make a mattress flame resistant, many conventional mattresses use harmful flame retardant chemicals or synthetic materials. Most people don’t know that organic wool is naturally resistant to burning, which achieves the same result, without flame retardant chemicals. Organic wool should be GOTS certified and processed without harmful chemicals or dyes that change the color, an unnecessary step in processing.

Organic Latex

Yes, it does exist! A common misconception about latex is that it cannot be organic. However, organic latex is made from the sap of a Hevea Brasiliensis tree, which is then baked into a solid latex layer to create a truly organic mattress. This is the only type of “foam” that should be used in an organic mattress. Make sure the latex in your organic mattress is certified to the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). Similar to GOTS, GOLS ensures that sustainable farming and processes are always used.

Now that we know what good stuff makes a mattress organic, let’s talk about what you should make sure is NOT in your mattress.

Flame Retardant Chemicals

Certain chemicals used to make a mattress less flammable can actually include harmful or toxic chemicals that can negatively affect a person’s health when breathed in. Using naturally flame-resistant materials is a healthier alternative.

Bleaches or Dyes

Chemicals are often used to make the cotton or wool look the exact same color. While this may be aesthetically pleasing to the eye, it’s an unnecessary addition of harmful chemicals.

Synthetic Latex

Rather than being produced from the sap of the tree, synthetic latex or blended latex is made from petrochemicals. Synthetic latex typically has strong odors, less durability and is not GOLS certified.

Conventional Farming Techniques

For wool and cotton this can apply to the animals used or the care of the crop itself. Certified organic materials must use practices that align with the certifiers quality standards, values and certifications.
