Why You Should Air Out Your Mattress

As Summer approaches, there are a lot of Spring cleaning tasks around your home or apartment that you might have on your to-do list. You open the windows of your house to air it out. You take that smelly gym bag and set it outside for a few hours to freshen it up. You might even hang clothes outside to dry. You air out all of these other things, why not your mattress?

Now, you’re probably thinking why should you and how on earth do you air out a mattress? Let’s start with the why.

Why do you air out a new mattress?

When you get a new Happsy Mattress-in-a-Box, you let it air out because it’s vacuum sealed, wrapped up and stored before being delivered to your house. This gives it time to inflate properly and allows fresh air to ventilate through it. It takes just about 30 minutes before your Happsy Mattress is sleep ready!

Let us be clear here, we’re not suggesting you air out your mattress because of off-gassing, which can typically happen with non-organic mattresses. We assure you the Happsy Mattress is not made with any harmful chemicals. This is just simply to make sure it’s as fresh as possible.

When should you air out your mattress?

After you’ve been sleeping on your mattress for about three months, it’s ideal to let the material breathe again. Try to air out your mattress four times a year or every three months, if you can. If not, do it as often as possible.

How do you air out your mattress?

Now that you know why you should and when you should air out your mattress, let’s talk about the how to. It’s simple, follow these steps and you will have a fresh mattress in just a few hours.

Step 1:

Take all of the bedding and covers off the mattress to let it breathe. This will allow the mattress fabrics to get fresh air, remove any lingering moisture from the material and kill any dust mites that get locked in between your sheets and the mattress.

Step 2:

Vacuum the mattress. With the mattress exposed to fresh air, run your vacuum over it to gather any dust or dirt that may have accumulated on it. With the mattress vacuumed, this will allow air to flow through it easier.

Step 3:

Move the mattress to a location that has good airflow. You can also move the mattress outside if you have help. Allow the mattress to sit out for three to four hours if you can, but for at least one hour.

That’s all there is to it! Just like Spring cleaning or putting away your summer clothes for the fall, it’s all about keeping up with a good routine.
