Tomorrow is one of our favorite holidays – Earth Day! Marking the anniversary of the modern environmental movement in 1970, this holiday is a time to appreciate the beauty of our planet and reflect on what we can do to preserve her. It’s a day we hold near and dear to our hearts here at Happsy.
Earth Day has a way of sneaking up on us with some big feelings. You might get the sudden urge to start composting, cut out plastic forever or maybe even live off-grid in a tiny home. And hey, those are great goals! But sometimes, trying to do everything leads to doing ... nothing. Living sustainably is about a lot more than just one day, after all. Real change takes a lot more time, and making real change is becoming increasingly urgent.
This year, we’re here to remind you that small, sustainable shifts still matter. There’s no need to overhaul your life to make a positive impact – just a few conscious changes can go a long way. So if you're looking for a more approachable way to celebrate Earth Day, we’ve got you. Let’s talk about some eco-friendly resolutions that are actually doable – and that might even stick around long after April 22.
Sustainable resolutions are ones you can actually sustain
It’s great that Earth Day gives people a reason to live a little greener for a day. But can you imagine the change we could effect if we treated every day like Earth Day? Spending some time in nature to pick up litter at the beach, volunteer in your community or plant a tree in your backyard are lovely ideas, but it’s much more likely that we’ll save the Earth through small, actionable changes in our everyday lives rather than grand gestures.
Think of it like your New Years resolution. All too often people go too big, and then they end up giving up after a week or so. Sustainable Earth Day resolutions aren’t just sustainable in an environmental sense; they’re resolutions that you can actually sustain.
8 Simple changes you can make for a more sustainable home
Looking for resolution inspiration? Here are eight small changes that make a big impact with just a little extra effort on your part.

1. Start with one simple swap
When it comes to reducing waste, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the options. Instead of trying to change everything at once for Earth Day, pick one disposable item to replace with a reusable option.
Consider trading paper towels for cloth rags (made from those old tees you have laying around makes it even better!), swapping out single-use plastic baggies for silicone ones or finally fully committing to that reusable water bottle lurking in your cabinet. (Bonus tip: wait to replace the item until it actually needs to be replaced. The best eco-friendly product is the one you already have in your home!)
One little swap might not feel like a revolution, but if we all do it? That’s some serious impact.
2. Support brands that back up their eco claims
The truth is, not every company waving a “green” flag is doing the work behind the scenes. Greenwashing is very real and sometimes hard to spot. So this Earth Day, it’s worth being a little more intentional about where you shop.
Look for brands that are transparent about their materials and practices and that have third-party certifications to back them up – like GOTS, EWG Verified® or MADE SAFE®.
At Happsy, we use certified organic materials, steer clear of unnecessary harmful chemicals and design every product with the planet in mind. We believe you shouldn’t have to choose between sustainability and comfort – you can have both.

3. Make low-effort, high-impact habits your new thing
Not every sustainable action has to be a major lifestyle change. In fact, some of the most impactful habits are also the easiest to adopt:
- Turning off lights when you leave a room
- Unplugging electronics when they’re not in use (this includes chargers!)
- Washing your laundry in cold water
- Bringing your own bags when you shop
These small, everyday actions might not seem groundbreaking, but over time they really add up. Plus, they fit into your existing routine without requiring a full eco-makeover.
4. Pay attention to ingredients
Sustainability isn’t just about what you throw away and remembering to recycle – it’s also about what you bring into your home. Whether it’s food, cleaning products or your sleep setup, take a moment to look at what’s in the things you use every day.
Using consumer guides from companies like EWG (Environmental Working Group) can help you watch out for toxic chemicals and make more informed choices. And if you’re wondering where Happsy stands? Our products are EWG Verified, MADE SAFE certified and crafted with GOTS- and GOLS-certified organic materials.

5. Switch to LED lights
LED lights are revolutionary. They use at least 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs, and they last up to 25 times longer. Less waste AND less energy? We love to see it. Not to mention that they emit less heat and produce a brighter light, too. And don’t worry if you don’t like a cool colored light – technology like smart bulbs make it easy to change to that warm, incandescent, homey hue.
But Rome wasn’t built in a day, and you shouldn’t go around arbitrarily replacing all your bulbs this Earth Day. Throwing out your old lights before the end of their lifespan would be wasteful, after all. But investing in some LEDs that you can have on hand to replace your old lights with as they burn out over time is a great idea.
6. Start composting
Composting is the natural process of recycling organic matter. With a little extra effort, you can transform waste such as leaves and food scraps into a valuable fertilizer. Beyond the product you receive from composting, its environmental benefits are great – it reduces waste, keeps toxins out of water and conserves energy.
It’s fairly easy to do, too! You just need a spot to store your food scraps and another spot to make the compost. Organizations like Compost Now make the process even easier by picking up your food scraps and making the compost for you.
7. Refine your recycling process
We all know that we should recycle. But most of us don’t really know the proper way to do so. If you’re asking yourself, “Wait, there’s a right way to recycle?”, you probably unfortunately fall into the category of those who are doing it wrong. Even more unfortunately, if you aren’t recycling properly, you may as well not be recycling at all. (Sometimes, it isn’t the thought that counts!)
Check your local guidelines to be sure, but in most cases cans and glass jars just need to be rinsed and have their labels removed. Cardboard boxes need to be emptied and flattened. Plastic, however, can be a little trickier – this blog post is a great resource on recycling right.

8. Let go of the “all or nothing” mindset
We all want to do better, but perfection isn’t the goal here – progress is. You don’t have to be plastic-free or live a zero-waste lifestyle to make a difference.
Whether you’re skipping the straw at your local café or choosing an organic mattress for your sleep setup, every step in the sustainability direction counts. And when more of us make small, meaningful choices, the ripple effect is powerful.
Don't forget to enjoy nature, too!
Today and every day, it’s important to step outside, feel the warmth of the sun on your skin, breathe in the fresh air and remember why this all matters. Remember why the extra effort is worth it. We only get one planet, and she’s a beautiful one – but she needs our help desperately. When you make small, meaningful changes to lead a greener life, every day can be Earth Day. Mother Earth will thank you.
